My Favorite Pictures

I became interested in photography when I was in college. Over the years, I've had the opportunity to travel to some very historic and beautiful places. On this page are favorite pictures that I've taken along the way.

I took this picture of a flamenco dancer in Seville, Spain. I used a simple "point an shoot" camera with the flash turned off. I knew that doing this would force the camera to use a slow shutter speed. As a result, the picture is blurred, giving it a sense of motion.

I took this picture at the palace of Sintra, in Portugal. While my wife and I were waiting in the ticket line, a dog walked up and lay down in a corner near the entrance. The colors and simple balance of this picture make it one of my favorites. The picture won "Travel Picture of the Day" on CNN's Web Site.

This is a favorite picture of mine because it was used on the September 2003 cover of France Today Magazine. I took this picture in Colmar, France.

There's not much to say about this picture, except that it's a classic shot of a gondola on a canal in Venice, Italy, taken on my second trip to Venice in 1993.

This is Arlington Row in The Cotswolds, England

I took this picture in Cordoba, Spain. This is the "Mezquita" which is the third largest mosque in the world, and one of the most impressive buildings in Spain. It's something of an architectural oddity because a Catholic cathedral was erected inside the walls of the Islamic mosque after the Moorish invaders were ousted from the city in the 13th century.

The view from one of the turrets at Warwick Castle, Warwick, England

This is Brugges, Belgium. Our hotel was the second building down, on the left. Some of the panes of glass in its windows are original, dating from the 1700's.

I took this picture of Budapest, Hungary, on a very hot August day. We were about to embark on a two-week river cruise to Amsterdam. Our boat was docked just beyond the famous Chain Bridge, pictured in the background.

This is a picture of a door and window in Lisbon, Portugal's Old Town. It's a controversial picture, because my wife claims that she took it!

This is a picture of the walls of Avilla, Spain

Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, Germany. Walt Disney patterned Cinderella's castle in Disneyland after this castle. It's probably the most famous castle in Europe, although it is relatively new, and was not built for defensive purposes.

Obidos is one of the most photogenic towns in Portugal.

My favorite town on the Danube River, Durnstein, Austria.

    The Rhine River

Volendam in the Netherlands

Mijas, near the Costa del Sol in Spain

The Hostal de San Marcos in Leon, Spain is now a hotel, but it originally provided shelter for pilgrims. This picture is one of my favorites because we stayed there. The sculpture in the foreground is of a weary pilgrim on his way to Santiago de Compestela. According to legend, in 813, the apostle St. James' bones were discovered in Santiago de Compestela. During the Middle Ages, 500,000 pilgrims per year traveled to visit the cathedral that was built to house his bones. The cathedral is one of the great shrines of Christendom, and during the Middle Ages was the third most important place of pilgrimage, after Jerusalem and Rome.

I took this picture with a digital camera while my brother, nephews, and I were eating dinner at this outdoor cafe in front of the Pantheon in Rome, Italy.

A lobster house in Maine.

A road in Maine, near the Canadian Border.

My picture of Monet's garden at Giverny made it on another cover of France Today magazine. (March 2004) The amazing thing about this picture is that there are no people in it. Monet's garden is a very popular tourist attraction, and it's very crowded most of the time.

A timeless picture of the Rialto Bridge, taken during our trip to Northern Italy. We ate lunch at an outdoor restaurant a few steps away from where this picture was taken.

The brick-colored building on the far side of the Grand Canal is the Hotel Rialto. My nephews and I stayed there on my first trip to Venice in 1990.

A unique view of Venice's Doges' Palace and the entrance to St. Mark's square, taken while we were on a gondola ride.

The Ice Queen from the "Nutcracker" Ballet. One of my favorite pictures, taken a long time ago. I think it dates back to 1978.

Another old picture dating back to 1977, this is the sunrise over San Francisco Bay, just south of San Francisco.

A picture of a tulip from Keukenhof Gardens in Holland. Taken during our tour of Holland at Tulip Time.

A picture of set pieces outside Verona's Ampitheater, taken during our trip to Northern Italy.

I took this picture from the balcony of our hotel room during our December 2005 vacation in Maui, Hawaii. It was about six in the morning and we woke to find the moon setting over the West Maui Mountains.

This picture was taken while on a tour of Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone, and Grand Teton National Parks. One afternoon we stopped for lunch at the Bear Lodge, 8,500 ft. up in the Bighorn Mountains. The two dogs were waiting outside the bar for their master to return.

This last picture is special to me because it's of the small town of Verbicaro, Italy, where all four of my grandparents were born.

My brother, nephews, and I visited there in 2002.
