A short vacation in Maui, Hawaii |
|||||
The pictures below are from our December 2005 vacation in Maui. Click here for our most recent September 2006 vacation in Maui. In December, 2005, we decided to take a short vacation on Maui, Hawaii. For many years, all our vacation time was spent sightseeing in Europe; but, because of the time of year and because we could only get away for a week, we decided to go to Hawaii. Although we were apprehensive about going there, it turned out to be a great choice. The trip started with very long non-stop flight from Los Angeles to Maui. Because of strong headwinds, the flight took nearly six and one-half hours. From the airport on Maui, we rented a car and drove to the Four Seasons Resort on Wailea beach, our home for the next five days. You'll notice that there are many pictures of the hotel on this page. I've included them because many people search the web for hotel pictures to get an idea of what the hotel is like before committing to making a reservation. We were very happy with our hotel choice, and we plan to return to the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea at the same time each year. |

Above left, the hotel was very well decorated for Christmas. Above right, is the pool at night. Spago Restaurant is in the background on the second floor. Below left, Wailea beach at 8 a.m. in the morning. There's a walking/jogging path just beyond the bushes that runs the length of the beach and beyond. The other pictures were taken from the path. |

That's not another island in the background of the pictures. It's the west side of Maui. Lahina is just around the left side of the mountain range. |

| Our favorite cabana and the view from it. Cabanas are free at the Four Seasons. You can claim yours starting at 7:00 a.m., and the pool attendants will hold it for two hours during lunch time. You can also have food brought to you. Throughout the day, the pool attendants keep your glass filled with ice water, give you chilled towels, and Evian spritzes. Below left, on Wailea Beach, looking north; and below right, the Grand Wailea which is next door to the Four Seasons. We walked over there for lunch and had onion rings made with Maui onions for an appetizer. | |||||

Before lunch, we spent the morning in the cabana, and I tried my hand at snorkeling over the reef near the hotel. I was a certified scuba diver many years ago and I'm fairly comfortable in the water. I had some trouble on the first day with a new high-tech snorkel I bought for our trip. The next days brought more success with my gear, after buying a basic snorkel at a dive shop. As you can see from the above right picture, it got pretty windy in the afternoon, so we decided to abandon our cabana and drive to Lahina for a little sightseeing. Also, I forgot to mention that Roberta and I have been to Maui before, but not together. We were there over 20 years ago! Click on the button below to go to the next page of this travelogue. |
